Conference: Silica Hazards in Construction and Mining
Conference Announcement Reducing Exposures and Preventing Disease
New Delhi
December 11-12, 2009
Occupational Knowledge International (OK International) in cooperation with the Public
Health Foundation of India is organizing a national level workshop in India to increase
the awareness of silica hazards and the availability of pollution control technologies to
reduce these hazards.
The construction and mining industries have long been associated with exposure to
respirable crystalline silica dust worldwide. Thousands of workers and those residing
near these operations are exposed to extremely high silica levels during stone crushing,
construction, and mining activities. The dust inhaled by these workers and surrounding
residents causes silicosis, cancer and is a risk factor for Tuberculosis (TB). Engineering
controls have been shown to help mitigate these harmful exposures.
The conference on “Silica Hazards in Construction and Mining: Reducing Exposures and
Preventing Disease” will be held on December 11-12, 2009 at the Qutab Hotel in New
Delhi. The intent of the workshop is to raise awareness among key stakeholders and
formulate policy recommendations to reduce silica exposures. Additional policy options
to better identify silicosis victims will be discussed with the purpose of outlining specific
initiatives to fulfill a recent Supreme Court directive.
Who should attend:
• Public health officials,
• Construction contractors and mining companies,
• Stone crusher mill owners,
• Physicians, and
• Relevant trade organizations.
Topics to be covered:
